A HOUSE AT THE WALL

Renovation of a single-family home in the Old Town of Girona. This project completely transforms a 120 m² house between party walls, organized over a ground floor and three floors of 30 m² each. The intervention begins by utilizing the existing stair void, located at the center of the structure, to place a new lightweight and permeable staircase that acts as a backbone of the project. Its transparency allows light to pass through the building from top to bottom, creating a continuous, fluid, and visually open spatial experience.

The new layout aims to optimize the spaces and enhance their relationship with the exterior. The proximity to the Girona wall and the presence of a quiet square right in front of the house add value to the project, where the public space is perceived almost as an extension of the home. This connection is reinforced with a unique material treatment at the ground floor, which interacts with the exterior and differentiates this level from the rest. The interior design is based on noble materials such as wood, stone, and steel, highlighting some vestiges of exposed stone and creating a warm, contemporary, and respectful environment with the historical context.
